Amber is not a mineral. It is the hardened resin of ancient conifer forests that stood along the Baltic coast tens of millions of years ago. As trees wept resin, insects, air, and fragments of leaves were sometimes caught inside. Buried under sediment and, later, the floor of the Baltic Sea, that resin slowly fossilised into the warm, glowing material we wear today.
Baltic amber specifically — known scientifically as succinite — is the most prized variety in the world. It contains succinic acid in high concentrations, which gives it a warmth, depth, and glow that no synthetic material can fully replicate. Around 80% of all amber found globally comes from the Baltic region, and Lithuania sits at the heart of that tradition.
For centuries amber was so valued it was called Lithuanian gold. It was traded along the ancient Amber Road from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, worn by Roman nobility, and buried with kings. To wear Baltic amber is to wear a piece of deep time.

Amber's colour depends on the number of microscopic air bubbles trapped during fossilisation. More bubbles mean lighter, opaque tones; fewer bubbles create the deep transparent cognac most associated with the stone. Amber is softer than most gemstones — around 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale — so it needs a little more care than a diamond. With the basics in place, though, a piece can be passed down for generations.

A surface scratch on amber is not permanent — the piece can often be lightly polished back to its original brilliance by a jeweller.
Is Baltic amber a gemstone?

Why is Baltic amber considered the best?
Baltic amber (succinite) contains a higher concentration of succinic acid than amber from other regions, giving it exceptional warmth, depth and durability. It's also the most abundant and best-documented, with around 80% of the world's amber coming from the Baltic.
Does amber change over time?
Slowly, yes. With exposure to air and light, amber can deepen in colour over many years — part of why antique cherry amber is so rich. Kept well, this ageing is gentle and only adds to its character.
